Presidential and vice-presidential signatures are a much desired addition to any memorabilia collection. Collectors of early presidents will see more material in the form of letters, which were the main line of communication until the invention of telegraph and telephone. These early handwritten letters allow for a more unique feel – one can see the strokes of ink and the flourished writing of some of the country’s greatest minds. There are also a good number of signed documents available for collectors, many of them somewhat boring and regulatory but requiring the signature of a general or leader who was later to become President. More recent Presidents use dictation, secretaries, autopen, and typing to compose letters and documents, so some of the individual feel is lost. It’s important, especially with more modern presidents, to have a specialist verify that a signature is not actually that of a machine or of another person.
