Buttons from the 1912 Election reflect Roosevelt’s decision to throw his hat back “in the ring” after displeasure with his successor’s policies. Roosevelt wished for a more progressive agenda to be pursued. After unsuccessfully attempting to secure the Republican nomination, he formed his own political party known as the Bull Moose party. Buttons depicting a hat or a hat literally “in the ring” became popular. There are multiple varieties based on this theme, with the less common being more valuable.
