After President Coolidge made the decision not to seek a second term, Herbert Hoover became the Republican candidate. His Democratic opposition was Alfred E. Smith, who was the first Roman Catholic to ever be nominated for President. This caused quite a stir, and many campaign items center solely on Smith’s Catholicism. There is more Hoover memorabilia than that of candidates of the preceding few years, but it is still relatively uncommon. Jugates are more valuable than Portrait buttons.
