Joe Smith buttons reflect the political drama occurring among Republicans in 1956. Some Republicans didn’t want Presidential nominee Eisenhower to pick Richard Nixon as VP nominee, but Eisenhower picked Nixon anyway. At the Republican National Convention, when it came time for the supposed-to-be unanimous vote for Eisenhower/Nixon, an anonymous Republican delegate wrote in the name “Joe Smith” on his ballot to show his annoyance with the situation. Of course, this tickled the Democrats, who swiftly made it into a button.
