Until the presidency of James Monroe, no official sets of State china were ordered for Presidential use, though early Presidents did order china with federal funds during their time in office. Most of the earlier china is missing or damaged, and it is more difficult to ascertain the story behind it. This porcelain set features a chain border with each chain containing a name of a state. In the center is Martha Washington’s monogram surrounded by gold. There is also a Latin motto in the center. This set was not the official State china of the Washingtons, but was probably manufactured for them for display.
