Until the presidency of James Monroe, no official sets of State china were ordered for Presidential use, though early Presidents did order china with federal funds during their time in office. Most of the earlier china is missing or damaged, and it is more difficult to ascertain the story behind it. This simple, elegant white and gold service was used by the Washingtons for state dinners and other official or important events. This is a large set assembled from a number of French factories. It was bought from the Count de Moustier, who had himself been assembling the set. There are marks indicated that this is Sevres porcelain.
