Until the presidency of James Monroe, no official sets of State china were ordered for Presidential use, though early Presidents did order china with federal funds during their time in office. Most of the earlier china is missing or damaged, and it is more difficult to ascertain the story behind it. This is one of the multiple sets of Washington China, though not the service used for official State functions. This blue and white set was of Chinese origin. The border was called a “Fitzhugh” border. A winged angel figure and an eagle, the badge of the Society of the Cincinnati, can also be found on the service painted in enamel.
