An elaborate orange, white, black, and gilt border on a porcelain white plate. The White House was burned down during the War of 1812, destroying whatever official China the Madisons used previous to that period. This China was purchased in 1806 for the Madisons and was used in their home before Madison’s presidency, though it eventually came to be known as the Madison’s State Service. Until the presidency of James Monroe, no official sets of State china were ordered for Presidential use, though early Presidents did order china with federal funds during their time in office. Most of the earlier china is missing or damaged, and it is more difficult to ascertain the story behind it.
