Though the Adamses certainly had china with which they entertained guests, it is unclear as to what exactly it was. It is known that Mrs. Adams like blue and white pieces, and common pieces of that type were used at least for some occasions. Until the presidency of James Monroe, no official sets of State china were ordered for Presidential use, though early Presidents did order china with federal funds during their time in office. Most of the earlier china is missing or damaged, and it is more difficult to ascertain the story behind it.
