Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States and remains one of the most admired Presidents ever to have served. He is undoubtedly most famous for his leadership of the country during the Civil War. Lincoln collectors will find there is a good assortment of items to choose from, though prices are high because of Lincoln’s mass appeal. 1860 in particular was a good campaign for Lincoln collectors. The most valuable items from the campaign are those featuring ferrotypes. There are approximately 120 different photographs of Lincoln to be found (though not all are on ferrotypes). Collectors should note that Lincoln beardless photographs are from 1860 campaign. Bearded photos can be from any other period. Other widely seen Lincoln themes are Honest Abe, rail splitting, the West, and pro-unity catchphrases such as "The Union Must and Shall Be Preserved". Lincoln’s beautiful purple state china is also extremely coveted, though it almost is never available on the public market. Lincoln flag banners are a must have for any serious fan – flag banners were at the height of popularity during the Lincoln era and there are a variety of designs to choose from, though finding one is neither easy nor cheap. Lincoln’s early letters were mostly written by himself, however, this changed as he grew more popular and dealt with the war and received letters from the public. Lincoln began to use secretaries at that time, but they did not, by any means, write all of his letters. His handwriting is a bit loopy and can sometimes be hard to read. He often signed his letters “A. Lincoln”. He sometimes signed documents with his full name when it was something he deemed very important. Lincoln documents are very popular and very valuable, with many admirers seeking autographed material even during his time as President.
