Herbert Hoover

Political Party:Republican
Offices Held:President (1929 - 1933)
United States Secretary of Commerce (1921 - 1928)
Herbert Hoover was the 31st President of the United States. After President Coolidge made the decision not to seek another term, Herbert Hoover became the Republican candidate in the election of 1928. His Democratic opposition was Alfred E. Smith, who was the first Roman Catholic to ever be nominated for President. This caused quite a stir, and many campaign items centered solely on Smith’s Catholicism. The 1932 Election saw the incumbent candidate Hoover struggling against the Great Depression, which had gripped the country for most of his term. Accordingly, many of the more unusual buttons from this time deal with slogans related to the Depression. Hoover did not have a state china service and did not produce a significant amount of written material. There is more Hoover memorabilia than that of candidates of the preceding few years, but it is still relatively uncommon. Herbert Hoover Presidential China Signature
Herbert Hoover was the 31st President and entered office with no electoral or military experience. Hoover typed most of his letters. Most are brief. Handwritten letters from his time as President are particularly hard to find. Some of his earlier letters may be signed by secretaries. He signed his letters with a large signature of his full name.
