Martin Van Buren was the eighth President of the United States and only served one term as President. Van Buren was the only President to speak English as a second language; he grew up speaking Dutch. He was the first President, however, to be born a United States Citizen. Some signed documents and letters by Van Buren may be found, though they are rare. Van Buren's letters from his early years were drafted by secretaries, but his letters as President are mostly personally written, with the exception of official letters. There are a limited of number of Van Buren buttons, brooches, and ribbons available for collectors. Some of these are sulfide brooches, which was a popular material and method at the time.
