William Taft was the 27th President of the United States. Taft was handpicked by Theodore Roosevelt to succeed him as Republican nominee, but Roosevelt famously became unhappy with Taft’s leadership and ran against him in 1912, causing both Roosevelt and Taft to lose the election to the Democrats. Taft was a rather large fellow, and unfortunately this is what many remember him for. However, there is a lot of interesting and historical memorabilia available for Taft collectors. Taft buttons are pretty common and can be acquired for relatively good prices. Taft written documents are also available to collectors. A funny series of items to look for: Taft supporters wanted to come up with a symbol for Taft that could rival the popularity of Theodore Roosevelt's teddy bears. After Taft impressively woofed down a plate of possum at a political dinner, logically, branding him Billy Possum was the Republican’s answer. For some reason, this never took off like the party wanted it to. Modern collectors, however, are left with a variety of possum themed items to add to their Taft collections.William Howard Taft Presidential China Signature
William Taft has the distinction of serving both as President and as Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court. Most of Taft’s letters are typed, and there are few handwritten letters. He signed his letters “Wm H. Taft” and his signature was a bit large and had some flourish to it, his handwriting being similar.
